Know your "why".

This week in the class I peer advise for, Interdisciplinary 2001, we discussed knowing your "why" or reasoning for why you do what you do. Vicki, our facilitator, showed a video featuring Michael Jr. You can watch the video here:

The nearly 4-minute clip inspired me more than I expected it to. I loved how Michael Jr. used Amazing Grace, a simple hymn as an example. The line that stuck with me was, “When you know your why, your what has more impact because you’re walking in or toward your purpose”. Being a young adult you are expected to know your purpose in life, but the truth is that a lot of times we don’t fully know what we are here for. Guess what. That’s perfectly ok. Social media leads us to believe that if we are in our “20-somethings” we have to be like these unrealistic Instagram socialites. Have a car, a crib, a partner, and a solid, good paying job. Everyone is meant to move at a different pace and reach their goals at different points in their life. It wasn’t until I got to college that I figured out my why. I want to help people become the best version of themselves. Show them kindness so that they will do the same to others. I don’t know my “what” yet but my “why” is to fight the injustices that marginalized people face especially black people. There are so many possibilities of a career that I could have but I believe knowing my “why” will guide me to my “what”. I want my “what” to be impactful, I want people to be touched by the work I do. I still have a journey to totally figure out my “why” and “what”, but now I am even more excited to continue on it.
